Why Cloth Diapers?
Disposables diapers are made mostly of soft, fluffy pulp. This pulp is produced by chemically treating wood fibres. The pulp is then whitened and softened by exposing it to Chlorine-based bleaching products.
This manufacturing method produces toxic chemical by-products which are dangerous and unwanted. They are found in large quantities in wastewater released into the environment, and they remain in the paper fluff itself.
Sodium polyacrylate is found in disposable diapers. It is found in the fluff layer and turns urine into gel. Sodium polyacrylate can absorb 100 times its weight in liquid. It certainly makes for an absorbent diaper, but has been linked to Toxic Shock Syndrome in tampon use.
A few dozen-cloth diapers makes more sense when compared to 5,000 disposables during one child’s diapering years.
